Monthly Meetings

Consistent Date and time

Designated on same date (i.e. third Wednesday of month) for ease of managing schedules, Ideally, no more than 1 ½ –2 hours long. Enable people to emote– really express frustrations prior to beginning the formal meeting. We all need to ‘let our emotions out’ sometimes. Open with words of dedication; Silent moment of reflection/prayer.

Each person representing an area will be asked to report on their area at the session or send an explanatory email as to

  •  What needs to be addressed and what action can be done in next month. (i.e., letters might be prepared and have available for members to send to key people, Protests or marches might be suggested–where and when).
  • Who can we collaborate with? How? It is critical that we network, where possible, and connect up with other groups. Follow up needed in the next month?

It could be as little as one would want to give it–or as much. On average, a participant might spend an hour or two per month finding out things about his/her area of interest, sharing with the group and suggesting some action in response. Then, there would be the monthly meeting. So, that in total could represent about 3-4 hours a month. And really, would that be too much when one considers our democracy at risk? Our need to feel engaged and included?

There needs to be an overall leader and a recorder who can recount all that was decided and done. This communication is critical. Where possible, they will update communication vehicles and help to collaborate with other groups.

All the info each month will be listed on a Telegram or Trello like device (app easily available) so that everyone can easily find updates. The recorder would list new dates and activities here.

Each month we hear about one remarkable person from the past –any of a number of staunch defenders of rights pivotal in history–who ‘stood up’ and were models. We are just part of this long caring line. Guest speakers will be welcomed. Realization of continuity, of historical perspective is necessary.

This is difficult in any environment, as there is rarely closure. Meaning is the key, following Purpose and seeing that we are making a difference, along with thousands of other groups who care. As John Lewis said, “You have to pace yourself. Better to be a pilot light than a firecracker.’ He also said, “Find a way to get in the way.” May each of us– may more of us find that ‘way.’
